Challenge

concept

Rooted in the client's branding, “Gyu Kyou” in kanji translates to the "Rumbling of Ox," guiding the concept toward expressing the raw power and energy of this mighty animal. By studying the ox’s posture, the design captures the intense buildup of energy that precedes a powerful forward charge. This movement forms the foundation of the restaurant's architectural and design narrative, blending power and elegance, all deeply tied to Japanese cultural symbolism.

SOLUTION

At the heart of the space, two main geometric abstract features define the design narrative. Upon entering, guests are immediately drawn to a six-layer golden panel at the rear of the dining area, which represents an illuminated abstract ox nose. The gaze is then naturally led upward toward the sculptural ox horn suspended from the ceiling. This geometric abstraction of the ox's form anchors the design, symbolizing the ox's potential energy. Together, the nose and horn create a cohesive visual journey that reinforces the concept of strength and power, immersing guests as they move through the space.

OUTCOME

The triangular timber structure in the center of the dining area draws inspiration from traditional Japanese rooftops, particularly Osaka Castle with its distinct green roof and golden details. Elements like the triangular roof, gold accents, and raw textures are reimagined into a modern feature that bridges heritage and innovation. The structure integrates glass panels with Kumiko patterns, blending craftsmanship with a minimalist aesthetic, while also serving as a light tunnel that guides attention to the ox nose sculpture, connecting the ceiling and surrounding elements. A mural of 65 running oxen surrounds the dining area, adding dynamic motion and energy, while a curved wooden detail above enhances the sense of movement. Layered textures with gold brick accents on the walls, inspired by Osaka Castle, create a refined backdrop, blending modern design with cultural heritage and adding a touch of elegance to the space.
